To get to the bottom of the mystery of her missing sock so she can run away in peace Zadie interrogates each member of her big, annoying family—even her dog Banjo—before a surprise discovery as she plays with her baby brother convinces her to stick around a little while longer.

Reminiscent of Peter’s Chair by Ezra Jack Keats and When Sophie Gets Angry—Really, Really Angry…by Molly Bang, Zadie and the Stripey Sock is a new story filled with handmade cut paper illustrations from author-illustrator Barbara Nye that explores family, identity, emotion, imagination, and the comfort of home.

About the Author

A visual artist originally from Texas, Barbara Nye has lived in Australia for over 30 years. She makes her home in lush subtropical southeast Queensland and spends every spare minute in her studio creating art inspired by the vivid colors of nature and by the simple rhythms of life. Barbara is the author-illustrator of Somewhere a Bell is Ringing, a bedtime picture book inspired by her world travels. It is a 2018 Paterson Prize for Books for Young People Honor Book.  Barbara’s childhood on a Texas farm as the seventh of eleven children inspired her to write and illustrate Zadie and the Stripey Sock, which presents a light-hearted look at a child’s ordeal so common in big families: the struggle to be heard amid the chaos of busy family life.

Praise For…

For Nye's previous title, Somewhere a Bell is Ringing: "The attention to detail in both text and art is evident, and the message of global interconnectedness comes through." —Publishers Weekly
