Vision and Legacy presents the story of a young German Jewish physician who left behind a life of success and comfort to go out to search for his Jewish roots. Dr. Siegfried Lehmann devoted his life to educating young people in Eretz-Israel (the Land of Israel).
This is also the story of Ben-Shemen Youth Village, where Lehmann’s vision became a reality. He was an idealist who saw the importance and equality of each individual. At Ben-Shemen the Jewish people who had returned to their land lived in peaceful coexistence with their Arab neighbors.
Dr. Lehmann believed wholeheartedly that art and music shape young people’s lives. Among his students one can find distinguished politicians (Israel’s President Shimon Peres and former Minister Shulamit Aloni). Other students who influenced the State of Israel attribute their success to the values they acquired in Ben-Shemen.
The book includes significant documentary material from some of the world’s leading figures such as Albert Einstein and Martin Buber. It also includes news articles, important historical documents, and memories of alumni.
Lehmann’s youngest daughter, Aya, authored the book. She describes her father from a daughter’s perspective, as a person who grew up in his presence. Her story describes the way Dr. Lehmann created in his own spirit, a worldwide respected community which, at that time, was the world’s largest Jewish educational institution—Ben–Shemen Youth Village.
